How to Clean SPC Flooring: Daily Care, Mopping and What to Avoid in Dubai

A simple routine to keep SPC floors looking new in Dubai: sand, mopping, the right cleaner, and the mistakes that damage rigid core floors.

By BestFloor team15 October 2026

To clean SPC flooring, remove sand and grit with a soft vacuum or broom, then mop with a damp, well wrung mop and a cleaner made for vinyl floors. Wipe spills up promptly, never use a steam mop, and avoid abrasive cleaners, bleach, wax and oil-based products. That is really all an SPC floor needs to look good for years.

SPC is one of the easiest floors to live with, which is a big part of its appeal in Dubai. A few habits, especially around sand, make the difference between a floor that looks new after five years and one that looks tired.

The first clean after installation

After a new SPC floor goes in, start with a thorough vacuum to remove fine dust from cutting, then a light damp mop with your vinyl cleaner. Congoleum's initial care advice is the same: sweep or vacuum loose dirt first, then wash with a suitable resilient floor cleaner (Congoleum). Put felt pads on furniture before it goes back into place, and lay the entrance mats on day one.

Daily and weekly routine

Grit is the main enemy of any floor, so remove it often and mop only as needed. Turning Point's rigid core care guide recommends cleaning dust and debris regularly using a broom or vacuum with soft bristles, and mopping as needed with a dampened mop and a vinyl floor-approved cleaner (Turning Point care guide).

Choosing a cleaner

Use a pH neutral cleaner made for vinyl or resilient floors, diluted as the label says. Strong is not better: harsh products can dull the surface or leave a film that attracts dirt.

Congoleum recommends a no-rinse cleaner or other suitable, non-detergent based resilient floor cleaner, and warns against one-step "mop and polish" products, dishwashing liquids and oil-based cleaners, which may leave a residue that attracts dirt and dulls the finish. It also warns against cleaners containing abrasives or solvents (Congoleum). Turning Point adds: avoid abrasive implements, waxes and bleach (Turning Point care guide).

What not to do

The biggest mistakes are steam, abrasives and too much water.

  • No steam mops. Congoleum says "DO NOT USE STEAM CLEANERS", warning they can permanently damage the floor (Congoleum). Turning Point agrees that steam cleaners should not be used.
  • No beater bars. Both manufacturers advise against vacuums with beater brushes or beater bars on hard floors.
  • No soaking. SPC planks are waterproof, but a floating floor should not be flooded; remove excess water after mopping. See is SPC flooring waterproof?
  • No wax or polish. SPC has a factory finish and does not need it.
  • No scouring pads or bleach.

Dealing with Dubai sand

Sand works like sandpaper underfoot, so stopping it at the door is the best thing you can do for your floor. Turning Point recommends mats at exterior doors to minimise tracked-in dirt and debris.

Choose mats carefully. Some rubber-backed mats can discolour vinyl floors. Turning Point advises avoiding mats with rubber or latex backs, while Congoleum recommends latex-backed mats labelled non-staining. The safe approach is a mat sold as suitable for vinyl floors, or a woven mat without a rubber backing.

Other sand habits:

  • shoes off at the door, or a shoe rack just inside
  • a quick daily vacuum in the entrance and along garden doors
  • a towel at the pool door for children and dogs

Protecting SPC from scratches and dents

Most scratches come from furniture and grit, not from people. Turning Point recommends felt protectors under furniture legs, wide non-staining rubber casters rather than ball casters, protective mats under office chairs, and never dragging heavy objects across the floor (Turning Point care guide).

Congoleum also advises against stiletto or spiked heels, which can indent many floor types, and recommends replacing small, narrow or dome-shaped glides with flat ones fitted with felt pads (Congoleum).

If you have dogs, keep nails trimmed; Turning Point notes that pets with unclipped nails can scratch the floor. More in flooring for pets and kids.

Sun and heat

Strong direct sun can fade or discolour most floors over time. Congoleum notes that flooring, like other home furnishings, may discolour or fade when over-exposed to the sun, and recommends drawing drapes and blinds during peak sunlight. Hot items can also mark the surface, so avoid putting hot pans directly on the floor. See SPC in Dubai heat and sunlight.

Removing common stains

Most marks come off with a damp cloth and your normal vinyl cleaner. Work gently and wipe dry.

  • Food and drink: wipe immediately with a damp cloth; for sticky spots, a little diluted cleaner.
  • Scuff marks from shoes: rub gently with a soft cloth or a tennis ball.
  • Oil or grease: diluted vinyl cleaner, then rinse with a damp cloth.
  • Paint, adhesive or marker: test any solvent in a hidden spot first, and follow the product guidance.

If a plank is badly damaged, it can be replaced. Turning Point recommends keeping spare planks for repairs, which is easy with a click floor.
