Can SPC Flooring Handle Dubai Heat and Sunlight? Expansion, AC and Big Windows
Is SPC heat resistant enough for a Dubai summer? How sun, AC and empty summer homes affect SPC, and the simple steps that keep it flat and stable.

Yes, SPC handles Dubai conditions well. Its core is mostly limestone, which makes it one of the most heat-stable wood-look floors, and it does not absorb moisture from the air like laminate or real wood. It still expands and contracts slightly with temperature, so the two things that matter are correct expansion gaps at the walls and controlling intense sun through big windows. In a normal air-conditioned home, that is all it needs.
Dubai's summer is one of the toughest climates for any floor. Here is what actually happens to SPC in the heat, and how to avoid the problems that can happen when the basics are skipped.
What Dubai's climate means for floors
Long, hot summers, strong sun, and air conditioning running most of the year create big differences between sunny and shaded parts of a home. Dubai's average summer high is about 41.8 °C, overnight lows stay around 29.7 °C, and average annual humidity is about 59%, peaking around 65% in January and February (Dubai Government Media Office).
Indoors, the AC keeps most rooms comfortable. The floor close to a south or west-facing glass wall can still get far warmer than the rest of the room, and a villa left closed over summer can heat up a lot. Those are the situations to plan for.
Why SPC copes better than other wood-look floors
SPC's stone plastic core is rigid and dense, so it moves less with temperature than softer vinyl and does not swell with humidity like wood-based floors. Floor Daily describes SPC cores as up to 75% limestone with no foaming agents (Floor Daily).
By contrast, laminate and engineered wood respond to moisture. Swiss Krono notes that laminate, like all wood-based products, expands and contracts with moisture (Swiss Krono), and West Wood requires 35% to 55% relative humidity at all times for its engineered floors (West Wood).

Expansion gaps: the most important detail
Every floating floor needs a small gap at the walls and fixed objects so it can move. Without it, a floor in a hot room has nowhere to go and can lift or buckle. The gap is hidden by the skirting.
Ecofloor's SPC guidance specifies at least 2 mm in residential rooms up to 10 m long and 5 mm for rooms 10 to 20 m long, with gaps also at doorways and around fixed objects (Ecofloor Signature SPC catalogue). The same catalogue says the floor should be the last thing installed, after fitted units, and that expansion gaps are needed around all fixed objects.
Common mistakes we look out for:
- planks pushed tight against walls with no gap
- gaps filled with silicone or grout
- kitchen islands or heavy built-in units screwed through the floor
- no break at long runs through doorways
Direct sunlight and big windows
Strong direct sun is the biggest stress on any floor in Dubai. Use blinds, curtains or UV film on large south and west-facing windows, especially when you are out. Rigid core manufacturers recommend exactly that. Turning Point's care guide says to "minimize direct sunlight exposure; use blinds or drapes during peak hours" (Turning Point care guide).
Sun also slowly changes the colour of almost any floor, rug or sofa. Moving rugs occasionally helps avoid visible outlines.
Empty homes in summer
If you travel for the summer, keep the AC on at a moderate setting and close the blinds rather than switching everything off. A sealed villa in July can get very hot inside, and that stresses floors, furniture and electronics alike.
Ecofloor notes that its SPC is not recommended for conservatories or unheated areas (Ecofloor Signature SPC catalogue). The intended setting is a normal, climate-controlled room, which describes almost every Dubai home when the AC is running.
Where SPC should not go
SPC is an indoor floor. Do not use it on balconies, terraces, uncovered areas, glass sunrooms or anywhere without climate control. Keep porcelain or stone outside. Inside, we also keep tiles in showers and wet rooms with floor drains, as explained in is SPC flooring waterproof?

Warning signs and what to do
Most heat-related problems show up as joints opening or closing, planks lifting slightly near a wall, or a soft hollow feel in one sunny spot. Caught early, they are usually simple to fix.
- Small gaps appearing at plank ends: often seasonal movement. Check the room is air conditioned and blinds are used on big windows.
- Planks lifting or peaking along a joint: the floor may be touching a wall, door frame or fixed unit. The gap needs to be restored.
- Skirting pushed outwards: a sign the floor has no room to move at that wall.
- Problems only in one sunny area: shade that window first, then check the edges.
If you see any of these, send a photo before the problem grows. Lifting a skirting and trimming a plank edge is a small job; a floor left jammed against a wall through a whole summer is a bigger one.
A simple summer checklist
- Close blinds or curtains on south and west glass when you go out.
- Keep the AC on at a moderate setting while you travel.
- Do not cover the expansion gaps with silicone or grout.
- Use felt pads and avoid fixing heavy units through the floor.
- Move large rugs once or twice a year to avoid outlines.
Heat and sunlight: floor by floor
SPC and porcelain cope best with Dubai conditions; wood-based floors need more care.
| SPC | Laminate | Engineered wood | Porcelain | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reaction to heat | Small, stable core | Moves with moisture | Moves with humidity | None |
| Reaction to humidity | Core does not absorb | Swells if wet | Needs 35% to 55% RH (one maker) | None |
| Expansion gap needed | Yes | Yes | Yes | Movement joints |
| Direct sun | Use blinds on big windows | Use blinds | Use blinds | No issue |
| Empty home in summer | Keep AC moderate | Riskier | Riskiest | No issue |
| Outdoor use | No | No | No | Yes |
Choosing a colour for sunny rooms
Light and mid tones stay cooler to the touch in direct sun and show dust less than very dark floors. Dark walnut looks beautiful but heats up more where the sun lands and shows sand and footprints. Read our floor colour guide for more.
How BestFloor installs for Dubai conditions
We leave the correct expansion gaps, keep fixed items off the floating floor, and finish every edge with skirting. We install 5 mm and 6.5 mm SPC, usually over the existing tiles, and the floors carry a 20-year limited residential manufacturer warranty from Ecofloor, plus our own 2-year installation warranty. A villa of around 200 m² typically takes two to three days, and our typical rate is about AED 80 to 110 per m² including 5% VAT, with skirting and stairs included.

FAQ
Is SPC flooring heat resistant?
SPC is one of the most heat-stable wood-look floors because its core is mostly limestone. Like every floating floor it still expands and contracts slightly, so it needs expansion gaps at the walls and protection from intense direct sun through large windows.
Can SPC flooring be installed in direct sunlight?
Yes, in normal air-conditioned rooms with windows. Rigid core manufacturers recommend minimising direct sunlight and using blinds or curtains during peak hours. SPC is not recommended for conservatories, unheated areas or outdoors.
Will SPC flooring buckle in a Dubai summer?
Buckling usually comes from missing expansion gaps, floors pinned by heavy fixed items, or extreme heat in a closed, sun-baked room. Correct gaps and blinds on big windows prevent most problems.
Can I turn off the AC when I travel in summer?
It is better not to switch it off completely. A sealed home in a Dubai summer can get very hot inside, which stresses floors, furniture and electronics. Setting the AC to a moderate temperature and closing blinds protects the floor.
Does SPC fade in the sun?
Any floor exposed to strong sun for years can change colour slightly, and rugs leave visible outlines. Blinds, curtains and UV film on large windows reduce this, as rigid core care guides recommend.
