Best Flooring for Pets and Kids in Dubai: Scratches, Accidents, Grip and Noise
Dogs, cats and children are hard on floors. How SPC, tile, laminate, wood and carpet compare for scratches, accidents, comfort and cleaning in Dubai.
By BestFloor team15 October 2026

For most Dubai homes with dogs, cats or young children, SPC is the best all-round floor: the planks are waterproof, the dense core resists dents, and it is warmer and quieter than tile. Choose a matt, textured finish to hide fine claw scratches and improve grip. Porcelain is tougher still but hard and cold, while laminate, real wood and carpet each struggle with accidents, claws or sand.
Pets and children test a floor in every possible way: claws, spilled juice, toy trucks, muddy paws from the garden, and lots of mopping. Here is how the main options really compare.
What pets and kids do to a floor
The four big stresses are scratches, liquids, impact and dirt. A good family floor handles all four without needing special care.
- Scratches: claws, grit brought in on shoes and paws, dragged toys and chairs.
- Liquids: water bowls, accidents, spilled drinks, wet swimsuits.
- Impact: dropped toys, running, jumping, chair legs.
- Dirt: Dubai sand, garden soil, hair and crumbs.
SPC: the strongest all-rounder
SPC planks are waterproof and dense, so they shrug off accidents and dents better than most wood-look floors. Floor Daily describes SPC cores as up to 75% limestone with no foaming agents, which makes them denser and more dent resistant than foamed WPC cores (Floor Daily).
On scratches, be realistic. The clear wear layer resists everyday wear, but no floor is scratch proof. What helps most:
- a matt, textured surface rather than a smooth or glossy one
- regularly trimmed claws
- a mat at every garden and front door to catch sand
- felt pads under chairs and tables
Our SPC also has a built-in underlay and damping layer, which softens the sound of running feet and claws. An extra underlay can be added for more comfort as an option in your quote.

Porcelain tile: toughest but hardest
Porcelain is extremely hard wearing and fully waterproof, but it is cold, hard and loud, and dropped items break more easily. By the international standard, porcelain absorbs 0.5% water or less (ISO 13006:2018), so it is excellent for wet areas.
For toddlers learning to walk and older dogs with sore joints, tile is unforgiving. Polished tiles are also slippery for paws. Many families keep tiles in bathrooms and outside, and cover the living areas with SPC. See SPC vs porcelain tiles.
Laminate: comfortable but vulnerable to accidents
Laminate is warm and affordable, but its wood fibre core can swell if urine or water gets into the joints. Swiss Krono says laminate is not suitable where water can collect, and even its water-resistant range is "not waterproof" (Swiss Krono). With a puppy or a toddler, that is a real risk. The full comparison is in SPC vs laminate.
Engineered wood: beautiful but soft
Real wood shows claw marks and dents more easily, and liquids left on it can stain or damage it. It also needs stable indoor humidity; West Wood requires 35% to 55% relative humidity at all times for its warranty (West Wood). Some owners accept the wear as character, but for most pet homes it is a worry.
Carpet: soft but hard to keep fresh
Carpet is the softest floor for crawling babies, but it holds hair, sand and odours. In Dubai, where sand gets everywhere, most families now choose a hard floor with washable rugs that can be cleaned or replaced.
Gardens, pools and sand: the Dubai factor
In Dubai villas the biggest enemy of any floor is not the dog, it is the sand the dog carries in. Fine sand acts like sandpaper under paws, shoes and chair legs, and pool areas add wet feet to the mix.
A few simple routines protect the floor for years:
- a large, washable mat outside and inside every garden door
- a towel by the pool door for children and dogs
- a quick daily vacuum or sweep along the main routes
- keep the tiles you already have on terraces and around the pool, where SPC does not belong
Room by room for a family home
Most families end up with one continuous SPC floor through living areas and bedrooms, and tiles kept only where water runs across the floor.
- Living and family room: SPC with a large washable rug.
- Kids' bedrooms and playroom: SPC plus a soft play mat.
- Kitchen: SPC; spills and mopping are no problem. Read is SPC flooring waterproof?
- Laundry and pet washing area: SPC without a drain, or tiles if you hose down there.
- Stairs: SPC cladding with nosings matched to the floor.

Cleaning a family floor
Vacuum or sweep often to remove grit, then mop with a well wrung mop and a pH neutral cleaner. Grit is what scratches floors, so removing sand quickly matters more than any product.
Two warnings from rigid core manufacturers: do not use steam cleaners, and avoid vacuums with beater brushes, which Congoleum warns against (Congoleum). Our full SPC cleaning guide has a simple routine.

Choosing a colour and finish for pets
Mid tones and natural oak hide hair, dust and fine scratches best; very dark and very glossy floors show everything. Match the floor roughly to your pet's coat colour if you want hair to disappear between vacuums.
- Light dogs and cats: light or greige oak.
- Dark coats: mid oak or warm brown.
- Any pet: matt, textured, with visible grain.

How BestFloor can help
We install SPC in 5 mm and 6.5 mm across the home, usually directly over the existing tiles, so there is no demolition dust around children or pets. A one-bedroom apartment typically takes about a day and a 200 m² villa about two to three days. We protect the home, move furniture and trim doors. Our typical rate is about AED 80 to 110 per m² including 5% VAT, with skirting and stairs included, and the floors carry a 20-year limited residential manufacturer warranty from Ecofloor, plus our own 2-year installation warranty.
Ask us about textured finishes when you get a quote. Browse colours on the floors page, see finished family homes on projects, and check a budget with the cost calculator. If your villa has stairs, see stair cladding and matching skirtings; for laying over tiles, see flooring over tiles.

FAQ
What is the best flooring for dogs in Dubai?
For most Dubai homes with dogs, SPC is the best balance. The planks are waterproof, so accidents and water bowls do not damage them, and the dense core resists dents. Choose a matt, textured finish, which hides fine claw scratches far better than a smooth or glossy one.
Is SPC flooring scratch proof?
No floor is scratch proof. SPC has a clear wear layer that resists everyday scratches well, but sharp claws, grit and dragged furniture can still mark it. Trimmed nails, entrance mats and felt pads make the biggest difference.
Is SPC safe for babies and toddlers?
SPC is a popular choice for families because it is warmer and softer than tile, easy to clean and waterproof. Add rugs or play mats in play areas for extra cushioning, and clean with a mild pH neutral cleaner.
Which flooring is best for pet urine?
A waterproof floor such as SPC or porcelain. Laminate and wood can swell or stain if urine gets into the joints. Wipe accidents up promptly on any floor so liquid does not sit at the edges.
Is carpet bad for pets?
Carpet holds hair, sand and odours and is hard to keep fresh in Dubai. Many pet owners choose a hard floor with washable rugs instead.
Will my dog slip on SPC?
A matt, textured SPC gives better grip than polished tile or glossy finishes. Older dogs may still appreciate runners or rugs along their usual routes.
